Culture Date with Dublin 8 – who, what, why, where and when!

Culture Date with Dublin 8 festival program has been released.

The festival will take place from Wednesday May 7th to Sunday May 11th and has many exciting events for locals to look forward to.

According to their website: “Culture Date with Dublin 8 is a neighborhood initiative, which celebrates Dublin 8’s rich cultural, historical and architectural heritage while encouraging people who are living, working and visiting the area to explore what is on their doorstep.”

Culture Date with Dublin 8 began as a festival full of events for the residents in Dublin in 2017.

There will be 100 events over five days for all to experience.

The community will join together to walk, talk and enjoy tours, expeditions, markets, family activities, performances and concerts.

Wednesday May 7th

Wednesday starts with an Irish National War Memorial Gardens Walking Tour at 2pm. This is suitable for all ages. There is no fee or booking needed.

At 3pm you can learn all about the Viking burial site that was found at Islandbridge. The tour in the National War Memorial Gardens will last 45 minutes. There is no fee or booking needed for this event.

‘Still with Us’, a talk and walk regarding the Liberties’ past of whiskey making will take place from 5pm-7.30pm in Teeling Whiskey Distillery. This event includes a walking tour of New Market area, a tour of the distillery, tasting and talk with Fionnán O’Connor and Alex Chasko. This even must be prebooked, with a €5 charge.

At 6pm, there is a free tour of Ireland’s first credit union, Donore Credit Union. This event does not need to be prebooked.

There will also be an expedition called ‘The Story in the Woven’ at the same time. This is a collaboration between The Liberties Weavers, a group dedicated to reviving and celebrating the weaving traditions of Dublin 8, and NCAD student Ali Ward. This is a free event and does not need prebooking.

At 6.30pm, there will be a free hour long talk with Angela Rolfe about The Irish National War Memorial Gardens. This event must be prebooked with KilmainhamInchicoreHeritage@gmail.com.

You can join the weekly Circular Pub Quiz taking place on Wednesday 7th May at 8pm in Rialto. Tickets are €7.50 per head and the minimum table size is 2 people. The first-place prize is a €100 gift voucher for The Circular.

Thursday May 8th

Starting off Thursday at 10am will be a two-hour long walking tour with Liz Gillis about Anne Devlin, the ‘Rebel Liberty Belle’. The meeting point is St. Catherine’s Church on Thomas Street and must be booked, with a €10 fee, which will be donated to Shannon’s Hopeline charity.

At 11am there is a free Culture Club tour at the Edward Worth Library. The tour will take one hour, and it is requested to attend the library in Dr. Steeven’s Hospital 10 minutes before the tour begins. Booking is required.

At 12.30, a tour in Farmleigh House and Estate about Arthur Guinness. The event is free, with first come first served. It is recommended this even be for 14+ and will last an hour.

A talk will be held at 2.30pm about ‘The Tilted Work-Life Balance of Dublin’s Domestic Servants in the early 1900’s’. The event takes place in Courtyard reception at Farmleigh House. It will last one hour, is recommended for 16+ and free tickets can be booked by emailing farmleighguides@opw.ie or phoning 018155914.

From 6.30pm, there will be a keynote lecture with Patrick M. Geoghegan about Daniel O’Connell and the Campaign for Civil Rights in 1820. This event is available with Irish sign language and booking is required with a €2.50-5 fee.

At 7.30pm, Paul Noonan from Bell X1 and Jim Lawler from SASO will be playing a gig at the Church of St Catherine and St James, in Donore. This even needs booking and has a fee of €20.

Friday May 9th

Friday kicks off early with a 6.45am rave from DJ Nialler9 in The Playground Studio in Rialto. This is a family friendly event with ticket costing €10 including, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

At 2pm there will be a one-hour Culture Club Tour of St. Audoen’s Church & Visitor Centre. St Audoen’s Church is the only remaining medieval parish church in the capital. This is a free event that must be pre-booked. Please note that there is limited access for people with mobility issues and no wheelchair access.

At 3pm you can find out about the connections between Ashtown Castle in the Phoenix Park and Daniel O’Connell and the Duke of Wellington. This is a free 45-minute event, and the meeting point is located at Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, Reception Desk.

At 6pm, there will be a Celebration Concert at Adam and Eves Church, Merchants Quay. The concert consists of David O’ Shea (organist), Marina Cassidy (Harpist & Soprano), Fabrè Choral Group and Ciaran Kelly. This is a free event, but prebook tickets are required.

From 7.30pm-9.30pm Irish Dancing Lesson Followed by Céilí will take place in Portobello Community Hall. No experience is necessary, and the event is free.

From 9pm-11.30pm, the Frank Carbery Blues Band will play a gig in Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club on Thomas Street. This event must be booked and has a €15 booking fee.

Saturday May 10th

From 11am-1pm there will be a family fun day held in St. Audoen’s Park. This is a free event and is brought to you by Happenings & StayCity.

From 12pm-5pm there will be a Marsh’s Mini-Figure Hunt in Marsh’s Library, St Patrick’s Close. Free event, no booking required.

Friends of the Iveagh Markets will share stories about the Iveagh Markets in the Main Hall of Tailors Hall, from 3pm to 5pm. Guests include James Madigan, Noel Fleming, David Delaney, Kieran Doyle O Brien, Kim Olin and Celina Anderson. The location of the event is in Tailor’s Hall, Back Lane, Dublin 8. This is a free event but is not wheelchair accessible.

From 7pm-9.30pm, Tales from Dublin 8, hosted by Donal Fallon with Macdara Yeates, Stephen James Smith, Helena Byrne and Padraig O’Lionsaigh will be held in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Tickets cost €20.

From 7pm, Throwing Shapes is celebrating their one-year birthday with a night filled with tunes, drinks and good vibes. The nights line up consists of 7:00 – 9:30 PM: Ricky Chong, 9:30 – 11:00 PM: Sally Cinnamon and11:00 PM – Midnight: Selky. Tickets are free but one name equals one entry, so do not book more than one ticket. The event is held in Throwing Shapes in Mill Street.

Sunday May 11th

11am-5pm contains We Love Markets at The Digital Hub featuring guest performance by Lavery. The Market will host up to 50 stalls, showcasing a mixture of local design and locally made artisan food, homemade crafts, clothes, furniture, bric-a-brac, vintage wares, artisan goods and plenty of hidden gems. Free event.

From 2pm-4pm, there will be a Spring Tie Dye Paper Flower Workshop in IMMA, Royal Hospital, Military Road, Kilmainham. This event will have guided instruction from artists Ciara Ball and Eleanor McCaughey. The event is free.

From 2pm-3pm there is a Biodiversity Tour of IMMA’s Gardens. This easy and enjoyable one hour walking tour will explore the site observing birds, plants and pollinating insects, in IMMA, Royal Hospital, Military Road, Kilmainham. This is a free event with booking required.

From 2.30pm-4pm St George’s Brass Band will hold an afternoon of musical entertainment in the park featuring some classics, music from the movies and some popular favourites. This is a free outdoor event in St. Audoen’s Park.

At 4pm you can join local historian Mark Jenkins and guests as we explore the history and modern memories of Meath Street and surrounding streets, alleys and lanes. The events meeting place is The Hyatt Centric. It lasts an hour and booking is required.
