Navan Road locals concerned about Garda station closing at night

Residents of the Navan Road and Pelletstown areas have expressed concern over the “closing” of the Cabra Garda Station overnight.

Residents of these areas including members of the Navan Road Community Council have said that this has caused people to feel “neglected”.

While there is always a Garda on duty in the station, it is closed to the public after 9 pm.

“The fact that we close the station overnight means more guards can be out on patrol instead of being in the station,” Garda Sergent at Cabra Garda Station John L’Estrange told a recent policing forum.

L’Estrange also urged residents to call 999 if they needed a call-out instead of calling Cabra Garda Station directly.

He described this as “cutting out the middleman” – calls of that nature would be directed to the 999 call centre anyway.

The community policing forum for the Pelletstown and Navan Road areas was held in Pelletstown Educate Together National School on Friday, April 11th

L’Estrange answered questions from residents and also gave a breakdown of crimes in the area.

Since the last forum there had been 16 reported assaults, he said, mostly from “domestic incidents”.

He said that there had been 10 burglaries, and he urged residents to “try not to keep cash in the house”.

Dublin City Council area manager for Cabra/Glasnevin Brendan Doggett also spoke to the forum and addressed questions from residents.
