With many plant-based losses in the west inner city over the last few years, we must commemorate those who step up with their menu options.
Whether you’re looking for a sweet treat or a savoury dinner, plenty of places are nearby to keep you satiated.

It wouldn’t be a vegan food listicle without mentioning Umi Falafel. Reliable, successful and boasting protein-packed bites, this food chain is 100% vegetarian and vegan-friendly. They pride themselves on clean food, with all their sauces made and food prepared in-house. They also focus on being affordable, as we all know how expensive being a veggie can get. You can also customize your sandwich, which is perfect for the fussy veggies.
First opening their doors in March 2012, they intended to make simple but complex food made from scratch. Food that makes you feel good – both mentally and physically. This cosy Capel Street cafe shares vegan mezze trays, cauliflower wraps, salads, soups, and funky drinks – both alcoholic and soft! Their dishes are of various colours, flavours, and experiences—something for everyone, both vegan and non-vegan.
This Rialto takeout spot has a chic exterior, and the only thing better than their designing is their food. Amber Grill has the largest vegan menu possible, as anything you could think of is offered here. The only downside to their menu is that it all looks and tastes too good, so deciding what you want for dinner might be harder than anticipated.

Thindi cooks up gorgeous Indian food that could make everyone swoon. Their colourful curries and soft naan would make anyone happy, as their high-rated reviews makes you hungry just reading about them. A personal favourite would have to be their vegan butter masala. Or maybe their vegan saag. But what about the mango curry? There’s simply too much to choose from, as you have a new favourite with each new dish.

The heavy influence of wood and natural materials in their branding reflects in their food in a way, as this easy-going, no-nonsense cafe serves breakfast and lunch until 9:30pm. They have toasties, tacos, warm bowls, seasonal dishes, sides and more. This establishment is strictly walk-in, so you should plan to get their early, as this Smithfield spot fills up fast.
This quirky cafe offers quirky lattes that will spike anyone’s interest. If you’re not feeling up to your regular latte or cortado, why not try a beetroot latte? Or if beetroot doesn’t tickle your fancy, they also have turmeric and lavender. This cozy but clean slate spot also offers a few food options, but they do seem to change often.
One of the best things we can do for our local economy is to eat and shop local, so why not eat more plants in the process too?
