League of Ireland history was made on Sunday, as Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers played their first game of the season in the Aviva Stadium in front of just over 33,000 fans.
The Dublin derby kicked off at two o’clock on Sunday 16th and set a new record for attendance at a League of Ireland game.
This new record overtakes the previous record, which was set in 1946 at Dalymount, when thirty thousand people showed up to watch Drumcondra v Cork United.
The derby brought an unbelievable atmosphere to the capital, with fans travelling from all over to watch the game.
Bohs scored the only goal of the match through midfielder Ross Tierney in the twenty fifth minute.
While the Hoops had the majority of possession and more attempts on goal, Bohs ultimately came out on top.
Rovers were just off the back of the first leg of their Europa Conference League tie against Norwegian side Molde in Norway on the 13th, while Bohs had more time to prepare having not played since the 7th.
Speaking to Liam, an employee of Rovers he said; “the atmosphere was fantastic from both sets of fans, and although the result wasn’t the best for us, we’ll bounce back on Thursday”, referring to their home game against Molde on the 20th.
He went on to mention how the amount of people in attendance felt “historic”.
“It just shows how much the league is getting recognised now, more than it would have been many years ago.”
This recognition will only “make the league better” and will hopefully make “young players coming up want to play in Ireland more”, according to Liam.
