This year’s Shop Improvement Scheme in D8

This year’s Shopfront Improvement Scheme in the South West Inner City area has aided 24 projects across The Liberties, Inchicore & Rialto, totaling €170,000 in investment.

The Shopfront Improvement Scheme from Dublin City Council provides funding to for businesses in the area, granting funding of up to €3,000 towards projects that either upgrade or maintain shopfronts on the area’s commercial streets. 

Its been the nine years since the scheme was first implemented, improving many commercial areas all around Dublin 8.  

Shopfronts that have been renovated this year include The Liberty Belle, The Thomas House, Mannings Bakery and Jayne’s Hair and Beauty Salon.

The scheme is open to businesses and commercial buildings across from Capel Street to the surrounding south central areas. 

The South West Inner City areas include The Liberties, Clanbrassil Street, Leonard’s Corner, Blackpitts, Dolphin’s Barn, Rialto, Islandbridge, Kilmainham and Inchicore. 

The scheme offers support funding for projects to refurbish or renew shopfronts. Measures to improve access to shops is encouraged, as well as shopfront ‘greening’, which enhances the appearance of terraces through planting.

Key services covered by the grant include painting, redecorating or repairing a shop front, replacing signage, changes to facilitate universal access and material changes to a shop front such as new entrances or windows.  

The scheme also promotes the conservation of historic features where appropriate, and the overall enhancement of streetscapes.
