What was once a psychiatric hospital with thousands of patients is now Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), full students.
The university’s new campus will accommodate around 10,000 students, according to the TU Dublin website. This will increase footfall in the area for the local business community from Smithfield to Stoneybatter to Phibsboro.
Bars, restaurants and shops will receive an increase in the number of customers in the coming months. Small cafés will become the morning ‘meetup’ place and the evening study areas for the students of TU Dublin.
“Well in terms of coffee, there’s Blend round the corner beside Tesco, it’s easy to get to and has really nice coffee, a great place to meet up with people,” said James, a 3rd-year automation engineering student in TU Dublin.
There are several student accommodation sites very close to the campus: Smithfield student accommodation, Broadstone accommodation and Ard CairnHouse accommodation located on the North Circular Road.
Since September, the campus has been buzzing with students, and the atmosphere is glowing, with lots of laughs, chatter and fun.
“It’s been great to finally have in-person classes and I love the campus,” said Nyah, a second-year photography student in TU Dublin’s East Quad campus, near Broadstone.
TU Dublin and the Grangegorman Development Authority have transformed the site from a long-time psychiatric institution to a city university campus with the help and support of funding from the Government and the encouragement of staff and students. The cost to plan, build and furnish the campus and buildings was €500 million.
