As part of our ‘Liberties Uncovered’ series, we spoke to Hawke – the exciting new musical venture of Richie Power and Eoghan Mac Mahon. Both hailing from the Liberties, they set up their new band in March of this year. The guys met through the music business and decided to put their artistic devices together and embark on their own project.
When speaking about their sound, Power said “We’d consider ourselves indie or alt-pop, but try not to box ourselves into a genre too much and just write what we think sounds good. We try to combine big band sounds of the 90’s/00’s with some more modern electronic sounds found in mainstream music.”
The name of the band is loosely based around their shared interest in the Law of Attraction. “The Hawk is known for having its eyes set on something,” Mac Mahon said, explaining that envisioning something you want to become a reality is part of the band’s psyche. They decided to modify the word and make it their own by intentionally misspelling it.
Inspirations for their music include The Verve, Coldplay, Oasis, and U2, which they are currently exercising while recording in the Abbey Road Studios in London. Another of their creative influences is ASLAN. Power told us “we were recently chosen to support ASLAN at their Iveagh Garden gig on July 13th. To be sharing the stage with them and opening their show is just nuts, they’ve always been such a big inspiration”.
They are also currently touring around the UK and Ireland supporting another act and will play in Dublin’s Tramline on June 23rd. From modest beginnings in Dublin 8, the boys certainly seem to have a determination to put their stamp on the music industry, both in Ireland and abroad. “We’ve so many plans for releasing music, touring and playing festivals this year so we just can’t wait to make them a reality”, they added. They have big plans in the pipeline and are definitely ones to watch.
