The Crypto Café just opened at 23 Aungier Street, is the first café in Dublin to accept cryptocurrencies as payment for their products as well as the euro currency.
The café sells a mix of hot beverages, pastries and sandwiches. They also have a number of student deals, including any coffee for €2 and any hot drink and pastry for €3.90. These deals are very convenient for any of the students attending the nearby colleges such as DIT Aungier and Kevin Street and the Dublin Business School.
When asked why they are including cryptocurrencies as a form of payment, owner Nash Basel said: “To reflect the idea of decentralised digital currencies having made a difference in the real world, we decided to accept payments in that form, following trends in other parts of the world.”
Upon arrival, you notice the café’s cosy and homely decor. There are house plants and quotes from Irish writers at each table. The stock market on several cryptocurrencies is displayed at the front of the store on a large screen, which is refreshed frequently so as to keep it up to date. There is also free wifi available to all customers and friendly staff who will talk you through the stocks and cryptocurrencies if asked.
Although Crypto Café is known because it accepts cryptocurrencies, apparently fewer than 30 people have used this method of payment since the shop’s opening less than a month ago.
The café is open seven days a week from 7am to 10pm, making it also one of the few coffee shops open that late in the city centre.
