Johnny Sexton’s last minute drop goal saw Ireland seal a dramatic victory in their 6 Nations opener against France.
Ireland led for most of the game, but when Teddy Thomas scored for France, nine minutes from time, it looked like Ireland would be disappointed in Paris once again.
However, Sexton landed the last minute drop goal from 42 metres after Ireland had put 41 phases of draining play together to give him the opportunity.
Speaking to the BBC after the game, Sexton said, “It was one of those moments, I’m just happy I got another chance as we have worked so hard over the last few weeks and all our goals would have crumbled today if we had lost”.
Ireland controlled most of the first half, but the game was dull as both teams struggled to produce quality rugby in difficult conditions. France’s lack of discipline cost them and they gave three cheap penalties away in kickable penalties, which Johnny Sexton converted. Their only score came from a Machenaud penalty after Rob Kearney was guilty of holding on in contact.
After half-time, Ireland continued to have more possession and territory but it never really looked like they were opening up the stubborn French defence. They traded penalties before Sexton missed the chance to give Ireland a two-score lead when he pulled a kick from 35 yards.
The only try of the game came when Ireland did not chase Rob Kearney’s kick to touch. France took the line out quickly and Teddy Thomas ran through from 60 metres. Substitute kicker Anthony Belleau converted to give the French the lead for the first time.
Ireland’s prospects looked grim when they gave away a penalty with three minutes left on the clock. However, Belleau missed, giving the Irish hope.
Iain Henderson won the ball from the restart and Ireland worked the ball up to the 10 metre line. Sexton sealed the deal, creating an unforgettable win.
