Disappointment for Wrestlemania’s Dubliners

Wrestlemania 33 took place in the Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Sunday evening of April 2nd, and there was plenty of Dublin, and Irish involvement on the card.

Cabra man Sheamus took part in a ladder match for the Raw Tag Team Championship, along with his partner the Swiss Superman, Cesaro.

The other teams in the match were the champions Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, and the team of Big Cass and Enzo Amore.

The contest turned out to be the most memorable of the show, as just before the bell rang it was announced that the Hardy Boyz had been added to the match.

It was the brothers’ first appearance in a WWE ring for seven years, and the 75,000 strong crowd welcomed their return with rapturous applause.

There was only ever going to be one victorious team after that, and unfortunately for Irish fans it was not to be for Sheamus’ and Co.

A trademark Swanton Bomb off a massive ladder from Jeff Hardy took out Sheamus and Cesaro, allowing his brother Matt to climb the ladder and retrieve the gold, handing victory and the titles to the Hardys.

The other Irish involvement on the card was in the form of Baldoyle native and former DIT alumni Becky Lynch, who was involved in the 6-Pack Challenge match for the Smackdown Women’s championship.

Despite a good showing in the match Becky was unable to pick up the victory, which instead went to hometown girl Naomi, who made the champion Alexa Bliss tap out to her submission manoeuvre.

This Wrestlemania is most likely to be remembered for the retirement of the legendary Undertaker, who was defeated in the main event by Roman Reigns.

After the match the Undertaker left his gloves, coat and hat in the ring, signifying that this was the Phenom’s final Wrestlemania appearance.

Elsewhere on the card Brock Lesnar defeated Goldberg to become the new WWE Universal champion, Randy Orton claimed the WWE championship from Bray Wyatt and Seth Rollins defeated Triple H.
