Spring fit into summer for free

With winter almost behind us, the sweet smell of summer is in the air. Thrust upon us as unexpectedly as a premature baby, and just as welcome to.

It’s time to pull out the spring/summer wardrobe. And while ‘money’s too tight to mention’, most of us have forgotten new year resolutions, to eat healthier, get fitter and most of all to feel good. Bikini clad, beach bodied selfie queens are sure to flood a news feed near you real soon.

There is still enough time to chase the winter blues away. We have a few tips on how to get fit, lose weight or just to feel good without spending money on gym fees.

“The fitness industry is booming at the minute, so is the internet. Most families have internet access at home in regards of computers, tablets or smartphones. Type in free weight exercises and a whole list of links pop up,” says Tony Murphy, a corporate personal trainer from Dublin.

Every week there are new  diets, there are health, fitness and mindfulness blogs popping up daily. Anyone can lose weight if they have the right mindset. “People hear of these fad diets and quick fix plans, and already they are facing a losing battle,” adds Murphy. “Change the ‘diet’ to nutritional plan, the word diet holds restrictions.”

‘Rome was certainly not built in a day’, it took time. And losing weight for long term purposes takes time also. This can be done by setting realistic goals. Murphy says “to set short, medium and long-term goals, while rewarding ourselves when we achieve them. Once you start hitting them goals, they become an addiction.”

It’s all about lifestyle: our bodies are the way they are from our standards of living. Instead of looking for perfection, look for progress. “If you can understand the principles of your lifestyle and nutrition, and always better yourself every day with small changes that benefit your s/m/l term goals then you’re always on the path of progression,” says Murphy.

There is also the old-fashioned way of walking, jogging or running. The mornings are getting brighter, evenings are longer, birds are beginning to chirp in the trees, and cherry blossoms are on the way. After a harsh and cold winter, why not get some good spring air into those lungs, and some colour on those cheeks?
