The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) open day on Thomas Street took place on Wednesday the 25th of November.
The number of students admitted to NCAD has doubled over the past two years but the current student’s displeasure was evident at the open day, as the windows on the design building displayed signs spelling out “Overcrowded, Underfunded: Go to IADT”.
NCAD offers courses in fine art, design, visual culture and education combined with design or fine art.
It was explained at the open day that: “NCAD is a single discipline college. However, first year begins with a period of interdisciplinary art and design research, observation and analysis”. This means that during the first semester of first year, NCAD students have the opportunity to try many different disciplines before specialising in one area.
Although it is absolutely necessary to apply through the CAO (deadline for CAO applications is 1st February 2016), a great emphasis was put on the portfolio submission at the open day, as this is what students admission is based on (deadline for portfolio submission is 4.30 Friday 5th February 2016).
