February’s Cinema Releases

Jamie_Dornan Legal 50 Shades of Grey

Spring is finally upon us after a long cold winter. The evenings will start to get a little brighter and the sun will get a little bit warmer, but for now it seems that there is no sign of the frosty mornings thawing. What does this mean? Lots of fun indoor activities to enjoy! One of the best things to do on a cold evening is to take a seat in front of the big screen. In the month of February we won’t be short of choices as there are a host of new films set to be released.

Some of us are still feeling the pinch after Christmas so make sure to take advantage of the deals that cinemas have to offer. The Savoy on O’Connell Street offers a €10 deal on a Wednesday. This includes your ticket, a drink and popcorn, which equates to very good value indeed (and their gigantic Screen 1 is just amazing!). With a valid student card, Dundrum and Tallaght cinemas offer a €5 cinema ticket every Tuesday, which is even cheaper than renting a DVD. Here are three movies that are worth seeing this month:

50 Shades of Grey

50 Shades of Grey is set to be released on the 13th February, just in time for Valentine’s Day (yes boys, Valentine’s Day is almost here – you’re welcome!). The much-anticipated big screen adaption of the novel by British author E.L. James is sure to be one of the blockbusters of 2015. Thousands upon thousands of fans will be rushing to the cinema to catch a glimpse of Mr Grey (played by the gorgeous Irish actor, Jamie Dornan). Successive teaser trailers for the movie were released throughout last year in order to create even more excitement for audiences counting down the days to 13th February. Beyoncé lends her vocals to the soundtrack and even recorded a special version of her hit song “Crazy in Love” especially for the movie.  If you are planning on attending an opening day viewing, book your tickets in advance as it is sure to sell out fast. I promise you won’t be so chilly coming out of the cinema after two hours watching Mr Dornan doing his thing.

Jupiter Ascending

With a beautiful cast consisting of new mum Mila Kunis and the lovely Channing Tatum, this story is bound to attract young audiences in their droves. This Warner Brothers movie is a fantasy romance story. Mila Kunis plays a young girl who wants more from life than just cleaning toilets and dreams that one day she will be important and do something special with her life. Channing Tatum plays Caine, an ex-military extra-terestrial hunter who comes to Earth to track down Jupiter (Kunis) because he knows that she is different. This film will be released on the 6th February and is filled with great eye candy – only one of the many reasons to go and see it.

SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water

Now for something a little bit different! Our beloved SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends from Bikini Bottom return to the big screen in what is their second feature film. This 3D movie is set to attract people of all ages; kids, teenagers, parents and, of course, those of us who grew up watching Spongebob Nickelodeon. With the first feature film grossing over $120 million it is clear that Paramount pictures are hoping this movie will be just as successful. If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted, laughter-filled evening, this is the movie for you.

With such a diverse range of movies coming out this month, you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding what to see. Whether it be a steamy mystery movie, a fantasy romance or a fun animated adventure, February promises to provide something for everyone including those of us who don’t want to spend a fortune. So get your coat, hat and gloves on and head into the chill this February.
