Cancer support charity Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, which featured on the Secret Millionaire in September, has released a charity single, to raise money for families of children with cancer.
The Dunboyne based charity, which was founded by Jimmy Norman after his daughter Aoibheann died of cancer in 2010, released the single ‘On My Shoulder’ on November 8th, with proceeds raised going towards a Christmas fund for the families affected by childhood cancer.
The song which was performed by the Dunboyne Youthreach Programme was recorded in St Patrick’s Cathedral in the Liberties.
“On the day we also had a choir from Tallaght, who sang Christmas carols for children of St John’s ward, the cancer unit in Crumlin hospital. It was just a beautiful day,” said Norman, who chairs the charity he founded.
“Some of the children from St. John’s ward came out to the cathedral. However we always have to be cautious with children with cancer as we have to be aware of infection so we tend to keep numbers down.”
Aoibheann’s Pink Tie is a charity which gives the money they raise directly to families of children with cancer to help them with everyday things such as getting petrol or paying bills.
“Coming up to Christmas I am getting a lot of requests for financial aid, and of course that’s going to happen this time of year. This is probably the biggest drain on our fund,” Norman added.
St. John’s ward in Crumlin is the only ward in Ireland which specialises in treating children with cancer, and this can be tough, especially when the families have to travel from other parts of the country.
“This is how Aoibheann’s Pink Tie comes in handy,” said Jimmy. “A lot of the time we help to get cars fixed and pay for petrol and accommodation to facilitate a family’s needs when they have to travel.”
This year alone, Aoibheann’s Pink Tie has given out €72,000 in financial aid, and this money comes from fundraising and donations.
“The charity single is only 99 cent and we are going to put all the money towards a special Christmas fund for the families of St. John’s ward in Crumlin hospital,” Norman said.
The charity hosts a special Christmas party in St John’s ward on Christmas Day for families of children who don’t make it out of hospital for the holiday.
‘On My Shoulder’ is available for download from iTunes, and all proceeds will go directly to families of children with cancer.
