“You can get anything in Meath Street from a horse to a car” these are the wise words of Liberties resident and two time Oscar winner Brenda Fricker. Inspired by this statement this reporter decided to take a walk around the Liberties to discover the unique products that are on sale.
Snow Cakes
It is impossible to walk by Catherines Bakery and Deli without noticing the vivid pink cakes in the window display. Snow cakes are sponge cake topped with jam and pink icing. Normally priced at €1.25 each this reporter nabbed a bargain deal of three for €2. Yes they are as delicious as they look.
Mooli
According to green grocer Jack Roche this vegetable which looks like an overgrown parsnip is the “new white turnip”. Mooli is of Asian origin but is actually a relative of the radish. Mr. Roche claims that it is delicious when diced up in an Irish stew. Priced at €1.99 they’re great value for money.
Hershey’s Kisses
These popular chocolate treats are made in America and are hard to find on these shores. However, Molly Malone Market stocks them, and at the price of two bags for a euro, this reporter couldn’t resist. Sinfully delicious.
Hand Knitted Baby Booties
A stroll through the popular Liberties market revealed many treats, but one that catches the eye is Kathleen O Brien’s stall. She stocks hand knitted baby boots as well as machine knit cardigans and hats. Made from soft wool and available in variety of beautiful colours, they’re a bargain at €4 each for the boots and hats and €10 for the cardigans.
Sheepskin Rugs
Dunnes Butchers on Meath Street had an unusual item for sale. Perched on the windowsill were some sheepskin rugs. The butcher informed me that Irish model Vogue Williams was recently photographed for The Mirror with one of their rugs. Priced at €50 they are a quirky addition to any home.
Rissoles
Sausage meat covered in breadcrumbs, so simple, so versatile, so delicious! C&N Meats LTD are selling rissoles for the budget busting price of fifty cent each.
Eyebrow Wax
These days it’s not often that you can get an eyebrow wax for less than ten euro. I was delighted to find not one but two salons on Meath Street that offer eyebrow waxes for just €5.
