Old primary school set to become church

By Alannah Hill

A former primary school, St Brigid’s, located in the Coombe, Dublin 8, could become home to a new religious congregation.

The building which was originally put on the market last year for 1.5 million euro’s is now for sale at the greatly reduced price of 650,000.

The large Victorian building, which is on over a third of an acre of land, has been attracting a lot of attention from foreign churches, mainly Nigerian and Romanian congregations who are keen to obtain a religious meeting house close to the city centre.

Prior to this, many of these groups have had to settle for empty industrial buildings on the outskirts of towns.

The primary school became disused when the Holy Faith sisters moved to a more modern building. A new convent was also built on the opposite side of the road.

Savills say that they already have a firm offer but are planning to hold out in hope of a better offer. The agents say they have also had interest from companies providing student accommodation, although it would need a great deal of refurbishment.
