Athletes Honoured at DIT Sports Awards

The 13th Annual DIT Sports Awards took place at the the Hilton Hotel on 15 April. DIT’s sporting elite gathered together at the location to pay homage to the outstanding contribution of individual student athletes across the many diverse sporting disciplines practiced at the college.

This year’s guest of honour for the ceremony was Brian Kerr, manager of the Faroe Islands national football team, and former Irish football manager. Kerr presented some of the 14 coveted awards on the evening, as well as offering up some witty anecdotes himself.

DIT once again proved its sporting prowess by celebrating those players who secured titles at both national and varsity level, in sports ranging from football, camóige and hurling, to water polo and martial arts. Hockey was one sport in which DIT noticeably strived this year, claiming both the ladies CUSAI league title, and the top spot at the Irish Colleges Mixed Championships.

Two new awards were given out this year, to both the male and female ‘Scholar of the Year’. This award was created to acknowledge students who have demonstrated not just outstanding athletic performance, but who have demonstrated a valiant academic performance also. These two coveted awards were presented to Irene Walsh of the DIT Swimming & Water Polo Club, and Graham Higginbotham of DIT’s Karting Club.

The accolade of Best Sporting Club 2010 went to DIT’s Karting Club, which was no shock to its 570 members. During the year the club also notched up top spot at the CUSAI Intervarsities, among a number of other individual honours.

The resounding success of an evening was brought to a close with a few words from DIT President, Professor Brian Norton. He highlighted the hard work and dedication of all those who make the DIT Sports and Recreation facilities possible, and congratulated all those who turned up to the event.
