Euro 2012 Draw – What about our neighbours?

Ireland can be relatively happy with their draw for the 2012 European Championships. Our neighbours across the pond, however, will have mixed views about their chances of qualifying for the finals in Poland and the Ukraine.

Nigel Worthington’s Northern Ireland side, have been drawn in Group 3 and will go up against Italy, who will play on Irish soil for the second successive qualifying campaign.

The Azurri pipped the Republic to top spot in their World qualifying group, and will defend their crown as World Cup champions in South Africa this summer.

They will also face stern opposition from Serbia, Slovenia and Estonia with perennial whipping boys the Faroe Islands rounding out the group.

In group G, neighbours Wales and England have been pared together alongside Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montenegro. Fabio Cappello’s England side have to be considered strong favourites to emerge from this group.

Scotland will have a tough time facing the current holders and world number one Spain, and could also struggle against the talented Czech Republic.

The Scots must also deal with testing trips to Lithuania and Lichtenstein, leaving their prospects of emerging from Group 1 appear somewhat bleak.
